Osinachi Nwachukwu and Husband

Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, located in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has imposed a death sentence by hanging on Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of the late gospel artist Osinachi.

The judge found Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide, which led to the death of his wife on April 8, 2022.

The court determined that the prosecution successfully met its legal burden of proof, resulting in the defendant’s conviction.
Nwachukwu was charged on June 3, 2022, by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (OAGF) on behalf of the Federal Government, facing 23 counts related to culpable homicide, criminal intimidation, child cruelty, spousal battery, and other offenses.
During the trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses, including two of Osinachi’s children, who served as the fourth and fifth prosecution witnesses, while 25 documents were submitted as evidence. The defendant provided testimony in his defense and called four additional witnesses, presenting four exhibits.

Prior to sentencing, Nwachukwu’s attorney, Reginald Nwali, requested leniency from the court, while prosecuting counsel, Aderonke Imala urged adherence to the law.
Ultimately, Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging for Count 1, along with two years of imprisonment for Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18. Additionally, he received a six-month sentence for Count 10, three years for Count 11, and fines of N500,000 and N200,000 for Counts 6 and 7, respectively.
