DSS Storms SERAP Abuja Office

Officials from the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed the office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) located in Abuja on Monday, September 9, 2024.
This action follows the recent arrest of Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), by DSS personnel.
While specific details regarding the operation at SERAP’s office remain unclear, the legal and advocacy organization reported through a post on X that the operatives requested to meet with its directors.
“Officers from Nigeria’s State Security Service (SSS) are presently unlawfully occupying SERAP’s office in Abuja, asking to see our directors.
“President Tinubu must immediately direct the SSS to end the harassment, intimidation and attack on the rights of Nigerians,” the post read.
On Sunday, SERAP issued an ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to rescind the recent increase in the pump price of premium motor spirit (PMS).
The organization called upon the President to leverage his leadership role and authority to instruct the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to promptly annul what it described as an unlawful and unconstitutional rise in the pump price of premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly referred to as petrol, at its retail outlets.

In an open letter dated September 7, 2024, and signed by Kolawole Oluwadare, the deputy director of SERAP, the organization asserted that “the increase in petrol price represents a significant violation of constitutional protections and the nation’s international human rights commitments.”
