Edo Assembly Deputy Speaker Resigns

Mrs. Maria Oligbi-Edeko, the Deputy Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, has stepped down from her role.
She made this announcement during a plenary session in Benin City, the state capital, on Monday, May 19, 2025.
According to Daily Trust, Oligbi-Edeko, who represented Esan North-East II, decided to resign following the shift in the Assembly’s dynamics, where the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) became a minority due to several members, including the speaker, defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
She was elected as Deputy Speaker of the 8th Assembly on June 16, 2023, prior to her resignation. Subsequently, Mr. Osamwonyi Atu (APC Orhionmwon East) was elected as the new deputy speaker after a unanimous vote by the members.
Additionally, the Majority Leader, Hon. Jonathan Aigbokhan, proposed a motion to ensure that all benefits associated with the Deputy Speaker’s position be granted to Oligbi-Edeko, which was seconded by the minority leader, Hon. Charity Airobarueghian, and unanimously approved by the assembly members.
In her resignation letter, Oligbi-Edeko expressed that her decision was made in the interest of justice, fairness, and equity for all constituencies.
She also expressed her gratitude to the leaders and members of the PDP for the opportunity to represent her constituency in the assembly. The lawmakers acknowledged her steadfast commitment and enthusiasm for public service.
