Expect Electoral Reforms Before 2027 Election – INEC Chair, Yakubu Announces

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has informed Nigerians to anticipate electoral reforms prior to the 2027 general elections.

During a statement made at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, he elaborated that the Commission has conducted a review of the 2023 general elections in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

He indicated that eight out of the 142 recommendations from this review necessitate amendments to the electoral process.

Yakubu, who was present at the State House for the inauguration of two INEC National Commissioners from the North-West and South-East, confirmed that the electoral commission is now fully staffed with commissioners as mandated by law.

In response to speculation regarding his potential removal, Yakubu affirmed his position as the Chief Electoral Officer of the nation.

He also mentioned that the National Assembly plans to hold a public hearing, after which a new bill will be presented to the President for approval.

“So, we are working with the National Assembly on electoral reform, but I am not going to give more details. You will hear from the National Assembly, but we reviewed the 2023 general elections on our own.
