Lagbaja: We've Not Appointed Acting COAS - DHQ Clarifies

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified that there is currently no appointment for an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) within the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

This clarification comes amid speculations that a new COAS has been appointed.

Reports had emerged earlier that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, is ill.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the Acting Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, Gusau emphasized that no such appointment is in place, noting that the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, had just communicated with the COAS moments prior.

He further mentioned that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, is presently enjoying a well-deserved break as part of his annual leave for 2024.

Gusau reassured that the armed forces are being managed with professionalism, highlighting that all Service Chiefs are fulfilling their responsibilities as outlined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Additionally, he clarified that Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, is delivering routine updates to the COAS in line with established military protocols.

“The DHQ urges individuals spreading unfounded rumours to desist from doing so immediately. The COAS is hale and hearty and will soon resume normal duties at the end of his leave.

“Media organisations are advised to verify information with the appropriate authorities before releasing fake news to the public,” he said.

The spokesperson for the defense cautioned individuals promoting a military coup to recognize that such actions constitute treason as defined by the Constitution.

He emphasized that the armed forces remain firmly dedicated to upholding and enhancing our democracy, demonstrating loyalty to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“The military remains focused on achieving its statutory responsibilities of protecting the nation’s integrity. The relative peace being enjoyed today is a direct result of the President’s support for the military and the dedication of the AFN leadership.

“To this end, the AFN and relevant security agencies have been mandated to take necessary action against any individual or group advocating for unconstitutional changes in the country. The CDS appreciates Nigerians for their support and prayers. Victory is assured,” he added.
