Plans Ongoing To Turn Nigeria into One-party State – Ex-Ekiti Gov, Odeyemi Alleges

A former Governor of Ekiti State, Tunji Odeyemi, has raised concerns over a purported plan aimed at transforming Nigeria into a one-party state.

The prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of taking measures to undermine the opposition.

During an interaction with journalists in celebration of his 66th birthday, Odeyemi cautioned against the severe repercussions and imminent dangers, asserting that such an anti-democratic initiative could jeopardize the very foundations of democracy.

He emphasized that a one-party system represents a significant threat to the progress of democracy and the socio-political development of any nation.

He said: “I think there is a deliberate agenda by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, headed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to turn Nigeria into a one-party state. To me, this is a dangerous trend, and it would not augur well for our fledgling democracy. No nation can prosper without a vibrant opposition.”

Odeyemi recognized that the opposition has fallen short of fulfilling its essential duty to hold the ruling party accountable to the populace.

He encouraged the opposition to strengthen its efforts and actively engage in the political arena to ensure the ruling party remains vigilant.

He emphasized the necessity for Nigerians to have a robust, dynamic, and constructive opposition. Such an opposition would consistently monitor the governing party, contribute to the evolution of our democracy, and guide it toward a more favorable direction.

“It would be very hard for the citizens to enjoy good governance, infrastructural, or human capital development in a one-party state arrangement. The opposition needs to put its house in order,” Odeyemi added.

Odeyemi, who held the position of acting governor of Ekiti State for a duration of 79 days, emphasized that the opposition must strengthen its resolve, organize effectively, and establish itself as a credible alternative to protect Nigeria’s democracy.

The former governor further stated that the PDP is undergoing a comprehensive reformation aimed at countering the purported detrimental agenda of the APC.
