Yahaya Bello: Details Emerge Hours After EFCC Operatives Tried To Arrest Kogi Ex-Governor

There were dramatic scenes and tensions to a crescendo on Wednesday evening as the sound of gunshots echoed through the Kogi State Governor’s lodge in Asokoro, Federal Capital Territory, during a pursuit by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to apprehend the former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic as EFCC operatives made attempts to capture Bello, who had previously visited the commission’s office but was denied entry.
Bello had visited the commission’s office alongside his successor, Governor Usman Ododo, and other dignitaries.
In a statement issued by Bello’s media office on Thursday morning, it was alleged that EFCC personnel resorted to force in attempting to secure Bello’s arrest, obstructing access to the lodge and resorting to firing shots into the air.
However, individuals with insider knowledge within the EFCC who communicated with The Cable disputed this account, suggesting that it was Governor Ododo’s security forces who fired the first shots upon observing the commission’s vehicle.
An EFCC insider remarked, “EFCC operatives responded in kind,” indicating that the situation quickly escalated into a tense standoff.
In the midst of the unrest, it has been reported that Bello successfully escaped from the lodge and departed from Abuja, thereby circumventing the efforts of the EFCC for the umpteenth time.
