NNPCL Rolls Out 12 New CNG Stations In Nigeria
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL) has officially launched 12 new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling stations aimed at lowering the cost of transportation across the nation.
It could be recalled that in May of the previous year, President Bola Tinubu announced the elimination of fuel subsidies, leading to a significant increase in the price of petrol from N197 per litre to N690 per litre.
These new CNG stations, with six each in Lagos and Abuja, were inaugurated by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo.
The combined operation of the stations in Abuja and Lagos can dispense more than 6 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) of CNG daily, catering to about 15,000 vehicles each day.
The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Mallam Mele Kyari, mentioned that beyond the extensive rollout of CNG stations across the country, the NNPC Ltd and its collaborators are also set to construct three liquefied natural gas (LNG) stations in Ajaokuta.
“There is simply no way to turn back on delivering CNG for all Nigerians. It is the right thing to do. Is it late? Yes, but we will make progress, we will cover the gap in order to ensure that the volatility we see with petrol does not apply to gas,” Kyari stated in his address.
The President Tinubu was praised by the GCEO for his support in promoting domestic gas utilization, with the goal of providing cleaner and more affordable energy sources to the people of Nigeria.

The NNPC Ltd is committed to implementing additional strategic gas projects to benefit Nigerians, in alignment with the presidential CNG initiative aimed at fostering prosperity for all citizens.
Kyari reiterated NNPC’s dedication to ensuring the nation’s energy security.
During the event, Mr Huub Stokman, the managing director of NNPC Retail Limited, announced that within the next year, NNPC Retail plans to open more than 100 CNG sites, which will include 16 NNPC gas marketing and NIPCO gas JV sites.
“CNG provides Nigeria with affordable alternatives to existing available fuel products. It will be about 40 per cent cheaper than petrol in Nigeria, and with continued investments, it will become a significant part of our energy mix,” Stockman said.
The chairman of the NNPC Board of Directors, Chief Pius Akinyelure, emphasized the positive impact of increased CNG adoption on the economy, highlighting the reduction in fuel costs for both consumers and businesses.
As part of the presidential CNG initiative, NNPC and NIPCO gas have formed a strategic partnership to expand CNG stations throughout Nigeria. This collaboration aims to construct 35 CNG stations across the country.
These CNG stations are equipped with advanced reciprocating and hydraulic booster compressors, ensuring a dispensing pressure of 200 bar for CNG vehicles.
The CNG is transported to stations in Abuja and Lagos through virtual means from mother stations located in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, and Ibafo in Ogun State.
