VP Shettima Arrives New York For 79th UNGA

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York to represent Nigeria at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

This information was conveyed by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of The Vice President), in a statement released on Monday.

Nkwocha noted that Shettima landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York during the early hours of Monday.

Upon his arrival, the vice president was welcomed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, and the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.

Additionally, he was greeted by the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, Kashifu Inuwa, along with Nigerian diplomats, UN officials, and other dignitaries.

Nkwocha further stated that, as instructed by President Bola Tinubu, Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation at this year’s UNGA.

He mentioned that the vice president is set to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and engage in various high-level meetings.

The 79th session of the UNGA represents a significant step in the global endeavor to advance the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The upcoming Summit of the Future, taking place during the UNGA, highlights the critical need for strengthened international collaboration to tackle urgent issues such as climate change, poverty, and inequality, while also addressing the repercussions of ongoing conflicts and global health emergencies.

The UN Department of Global Communications is set to host its main SDG Media Zone during the prestigious week of September 23-27, featuring detailed interviews and discussions on worldwide issues that are important to individuals across the globe.

The Head of States and Governments will convene at the UN Headquarters in New York from September 22-23 to tackle the pressing issues and deficiencies in global governance highlighted by recent worldwide events.

The summit is designed to reaffirm pledges to the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Charter, while also strengthening collaboration and establishing the groundwork for a revitalized global governance system.

The summit will culminate in a signed Pact for the Future, a document focused on strengthening global collaboration and effectively addressing current challenges for the benefit of everyone and future generations.

Furthermore, the UN Secretary-General is organizing the Summit of the Future Action Days on September 20 and 21 to create more chances for the involvement of all stakeholders.
